There is no easier way to consume cannabis than with vape carts. Screw the cart into a charged-up 510 battery, tweak the settings for the hit you want, and you’re on your way.

Stick- or pen-style batteries are simple to learn and operate. Without a digital screen, these minimalist devices use LEDs to convey information to the user.

Ooze manufactures a popular line of weed vapes, and the company is especially known for its reliable and easy-to-use weed pens

This article explains the “language” of Ooze pens’ indicator lights, focusing on Ooze’s popular pen-style batteries, including these:

  • Ooze 650/900/1100 Standard Battery
  • Ooze 650/900/1100 Twist Battery
  • Ooze Twist Slim Pen
  • Ooze Twist Slim Pen 2.0

How to use an Ooze pen

Before we get into troubleshooting, let’s make sure you’re using your Ooze pen properly. It won’t take long to figure out; Ooze pens and vape carts are pretty easy to operate.

Follow these steps:

  • Before starting, charge your battery.
  • Screw on a cart.
  • Press the pen’s button five times to turn it on.
  • With Twist and Twist Slim batteries, use the bottom dial to adjust the voltage to your preference.
  • Press the button twice to activate prep (preheat) mode; deactivate preheat with one quick press.
  • Hold down the button and draw on the cart.

With most Ooze pens (not the Standard and original Twist models), you can also draw to activate rather than using the button. Check the Ooze pen manual for details.

Why is my Ooze pen blinking green?

As you press and hold your Ooze pen’s button, the light will flash green. That’s intended, but if the light flashes repeatedly and the device isn’t working, that indicates a problem.

Ooze’s Standard and OG Twist pens may also light up white or red. White means that you’ve hit 50% power and need to charge your pen soon. Red indicates a dead battery.

Drained battery

Most likely, if your Ooze pen is flashing green (10 to 15 times consecutively), your battery is drained. All you need to do at this point is plug it in for a charge.

To avoid potential issues (we’ll get into those in a minute), Ooze recommends using the charger included with your device. Should your battery wind up damaged because of a third-party charger, your pen is no longer covered under their warranty.

Connection issue

If your Ooze pen is plugged in and flashes green four times, there’s a connection issue. Using the charger included with your device could resolve the problem. Otherwise, the Ooze charger itself could be defective or damaged or dead—or the pen may be screwed on improperly.

A solid green light indicates that your pen is charging—it’ll shut off once the battery is full. Meanwhile, the light on the charger itself will go from red to green.

Attaching a vape cart can also cause connection issues. Unscrew the cart and make sure the connections on the cart and battery are clean and dry. Gently clean off any debris with isopropyl alcohol, or if there’s none, check for damage and irregularities. Be sure not to over- or under-tighten.

Lastly, the cart itself could be misshapen or defective.

Damage or defects

When your Ooze pen isn’t working, and you don't know why it’s blinking, it could be damaged.

Contact Ooze customer service at this point, especially if your product is new. There’s a chance it was damaged in transit or could be defective.

Prep (preheat) mode

When you activate prep mode by pressing the button twice, your Ooze pen will flash 10 times as it heats up. After around 20 seconds, the cycle is complete, and the light will shut back off. It won’t flash again until you take a hit.

Ooze pen not working: six possible reasons (and fixes)

Ooze pens can have the same problems as other 510-thread batteries. You may already be familiar with these potential snags (and fixes).

1. Dirty connection point

If your Ooze pen is turned on but can't produce vapor, wipe the connection point.

Start by dipping a cotton swab in isopropyl alcohol. Don’t drench it; lightly damp is enough. You can then gently scrub the battery threads, clearing away oil leaks and residue, should you discover any. Do the same with your cart before setting both pieces aside to dry.

Make sure your Ooze battery is powered down before you clean it, and don’t turn it on again until it’s fully dried off.

2. Cart not screwed on correctly

Alternatively, the connection issue may be the result of a poorly screwed-on CBD or THC cart.

Finger-tight is the goal. Your cart shouldn’t wiggle around while you vape, but overtightening can lead to permanent damage to either the cart or the Ooze battery. Twist until everything feels secure, but don’t tighten beyond that.

Don’t under-tighten your cart, either. That also will result in a poor connection and no vapor.

3. Clogged cart

Everyone deals with a clogged cart at some point. Your issue could stem from that, rather than the Ooze battery itself. If the pen is charged and turned on but you’ll get little to no airflow, you might have a clog.

Fortunately, this is a simple issue to diagnose. Either screw the cart onto a new battery and give it another try, or try using a different cart. If the cart doesn’t work on either pen, or a fresh cart works on the pen in question, you can be certain the original cart is the issue.

Depending on the type of clog and its severity, it may be possible to get your clogged cart back in working order. Just be careful not to worsen the issue; stop vaping as soon as you suspect a clog is at play, since the last thing you want to do is make the blockage worse or cause the cart to leak.

4. Broken or defective charger

Using the USB charger included with your Ooze product can minimize the risk of charger issues—but even those fail eventually.

Contact Ooze customer support if your charger is a dud right out of the box. It could be defective. Otherwise, you can try buying a new one, especially if the charger has already had a long and fruitful life.

Avoid using a non-Ooze charger with your pen. Maybe in a pinch, but again, doing so voids your warranty.

5. Counterfeit product

Unless you’ve ordered directly through the Ooze site, you should verify your Ooze battery is authentic. Here’s how:

  • A light that flashes purple rather than Ooze’s standard green.
  • An unrealistically low price tag. Check the Ooze site for a general idea of what you should be paying.
  • A light that stays on when your battery is already fully charged (not including the charger’s light).
  • No horizontal line running around the Twist Slim’s temperature dial.
  • No authentication code.
  • Plastic (non-metal) casing.

Knockoff Ooze batteries might still work, but counterfeits of any kind are likely to break or cause problems.

You can’t register or return a fake Ooze battery. All you can do is cut your losses and purchase a new product.

There is one way around a total loss, though: filling out Ooze’s counterfeit product form. If you can prove you’ve been duped into buying a knockoff (and give Ooze a lead to investigate), they may send you a replacement.

6. Broken battery

The sad truth of vape batteries is that none of them last forever. They all need replacing sooner or later.

High-quality 510-thread batteries will hold out for at least a few months with frequent use, but how you care for them plays a huge role. Don’t overcharge your pen; always store it at room temperature, and avoid dropping it. You might even be able to squeeze a couple of years out of one, but that’s probably the outer limit if you vape every day.

If you’ve tried everything and your Ooze pen still isn’t charging, turning on, or producing vapor, it’s probably time to pick up a new one.

Contact Ooze customer support if your device is registered and still under warranty.
