Vivant VLeaF GO: On Demand Convection at Your Fingertips

What is it?

The VLeaF GO is a portable vaporizer for dry herb. It features a pen-style form factor with an internal battery and three heat settings. There have not been many vape pens that are actually capable of true vaporization, so I’m very interested in how it performs. According to Vivant, the VLeaF GO utilizes convection heating, which is impressive for a device of its stature.

So far, most of the dry herb vape pens I’ve tried in the past have been disappointing. I wonder if the VLeaF GO is going to be one of the rare exceptions that provide true vapor without combustion. Can a vape pen deliver the same performance as some of the best weed vaporizers out there?

What's in the box?

The kit includes everything you’ll need to use and maintain your VLeaF GO. All you’ll need is some THC or CBD-rich flower. It includes the charging cable, spare chamber, mesh screen, spare O-rings, a rubber mouthpiece cover, air cooler, packing tool and cleaning brush. Everything comes fully assembled and is ready to go right out of the box, as long as it’s charged up. Let’s take a look at some of its main features.

Product features

The most notable feature on the VLeaF GO is on-demand convection heating. The mouthpiece has a built-in tip that can be used as a packing tool when on the go. The chamber actually has a lip that makes it super easy to scoop up your ground flower. The VLeaf GO is ready to be paired with a water pipe without the need for an adapter. I found that it sits best inside of an 18 mm female joint, but I’ve tested it with 14 mm ones too. You might need to slightly hold it in place, it will not sit flush. The device has a 30-second session mode feature, so you won’t have to hold the button when in use. This comes in extra handy especially when using it with a water pipe.

The herb chamber is made of metal and the heating element is actually SS316 stainless steel coated in ceramic. Both are removable and replaceable. A new heating element goes for about $15 and the chamber itself goes for $7. The kit comes with a spare, which should last a while. The top cap is also available for $10, and all the other accessories are priced at around $5. Inside the mouthpiece is a rubber piece that sits in between a mesh screen to cool the vapor.

The VLeaF provides battery life indication using three-color LEDs. Just press the button and it will light up green if it’s fully charged, yellow on a half charge, and red when it’s on low battery. The same colors are used to indicate the temperature settings. The device charges via micro USB through a charging port located on the side of the device. It has a 900 mAh capacity, which is enough for at least a handful of sessions. It also does pass-thru charging! Just keep in mind that it will light up red while charging, and will turn green when charged, no matter which heat setting you are using. You might need to press the button twice to check your battery level.

How to use

The VLeaF GO features a simple one-button interface. It takes a bit of practice to get the hang of it, but overall it’s pretty intuitive. Before you get started, make sure the device is fully charged.

How does it perform?

I initially tested the VLeaF GO as a standalone vape pen. Then I decided to try it out with a water pipe. As soon as you press the button it just cranks right up and is producing vapor within a few seconds! The vapor was nice and dense if you pack a decent amount. The flavor tends to be better on the lowest heat setting, but the vapor production improves significantly on the higher settings, so it’s a tradeoff. I enjoyed the VLeaF GO most on the highest setting because I get 3-4 huge rips off a tiny 0.2-gram pack. The flavor doesn’t blow me away, but the cool part is that I don’t get any burnt hits even on the high setting. The top cap can get pretty warm too.

Aside from its quick heating abilities, it literally never burned my herb! No matter what I tried to do, fine grind, coarse grind, it just worked. You can actually get away with chucking in a little piece of a bud if it’s small enough and just pack it down tightly. I find that a coarse grind works best, even if you do it by hand. However you choose to grind it, you’ll want to make sure it’s packed in nicely or small pieces or it will fly off into the mouthpiece when inhaling.

When I tested it with a water pipe, things got interesting. I don’t have a lot of experience with vaping through a pipe, but it was easy. I just packed it up, pressed the button, and started inhaling. Then took the VLeaF GO out and cleared the pipe. It worked flawlessly. It’s nice to know that you can take your session to the next level at home, or if you’re going somewhere where there’s a bong. I love using it with a water pipe, but it works great as a standalone vape pen too! It allows you vape using your favorite glass pieces, but only without the combustion.

Verdict

Overall, I think Vivant did a really good job with this device. The VLeaF GO is easy to use, and it works consistently with every strain I’ve tested it with. It’s like the modern version of the old Dug Out. You just scoop some flower up, pack it in, and you can get a couple of hits of vapor out of it.

There are still a few cons that I’ve noticed. The battery life could be better, but I’m guessing that’s due to its slim form factor. I would have liked for the top cap to lock in a bit more securely. The O-rings hold well but it can come off in your pocket, or if you drop it. Also, the temp values are unknown, but I don’t think it was meant to be such a technical device. At the end of the day, it does an excellent job at not burning my bud, which is what I was most concerned with.

Honestly, I’ve never seen a vape pen like the VLeaF GO. The only device that even comes close was the original Atmos Jump, and the VLeaf is way more versatile. To sum it up, it’s lightweight, slim, versatile and easy to use. It’s also fairly priced, considering it’s one of the few dry herb vapes for under $100. And it seems to have a potentially long lifespan due to the fact that the parts are replaceable. This is the dry herb vape pen I’ve been waiting for. It’s about time, but better late than never.
